Painting outdoors at the Edinburg Wetlands around the corner from my studio, my thoughts are on the National Butterfly Center a couple towns over. It's main building is about to be torn down for the border wall. I am heart broken that this gathering place, a monument to the unique diversity of our migrating butterflies, will be destroyed.
I try to focus on the joy of creating, and watch the families who wander past, kids with binoculars excited to see the fish, birds and insects. Schools are off today and families are taking advantage of the beautiful weather. I try to remind myself that my work is not about politics. It's about life that existed before us, and will (hopefully) continue to exist long after. I play with abstractions, enjoying the movement, getting lost in the colors. I try to draw a palm without drawing the palm. |
