artist statement for art ecologic
Focused on chaos and movement in nature, I create artworks that are energetic magnifications of natural spaces. With each painting, I gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of my subject and become even more inspired and passionate about sharing my discoveries through art. Every day, these delicate ecosystems- of which we are a part- are in danger of being poisoned or demolished. It's a problem easily ignored because modern life is designed to keep us separated from nature. And yet, because our well-being is inextricably tied to the health of our planet, we really can’t afford to do so.
Art Ecologic is about reconnecting to the natural world. Paintings explore the balance between specific objects (such as a bird or flower) and the movements within and around them. As a student of nature, I learn no animal exists on its own, but is connected to a vast network of systems that support life. Therefore, my compositions include the messy layered surroundings that make up the environment in which an animal lives.
In the center of the exhibition space, a collection of seeds serves to compliment the surrounding paintings of native plants, birds, and butterflies. These miniature, natural sculptures are packed with the potential for life, not only of the plants from which they come, but of all the insects, birds, and microorganisms those plants will support. They are the foundation from which the subjects of my paintings are built. Visitors are invited to take seeds home to plant in their gardens or throw into a vacant field, becoming active participants in the ecosystems that inspire the art. Visitors are also invited to join me for a three-part workshop series on keeping a nature journal, using writing, drawing and painting to further explore our relationship with nature.
